Sarah Sjoholm-Patience joins the ranks of Centre10’s Advanced Coaches

I’m delighted to announce that I’ve just returned from the final day of the Centre10 Applied Psychology for Equestrian Coaches (APEC) Advanced course, having achieved ‘Centre10 Advanced Coach’ certification.

As an athlete and equestrian coach I have always had a special interest in psychology and mental performance, and this program has helped give me a solid grounding in the topic. These are invaluable tools that I truly believe will help my riders achieve their goals, large and small.

The program has given me a good overview of mental training and preparation topics specifically as they relate to equestrian sport, as well as giving me the opportunity to learn and work with a fantastic group of other highly experienced coaches.

As part of the final day we each gave presentations on either case studies or topics we were interested in, allowing us the opportunity to learn from one and other. I researched and gave a presentation on habits and habit formation, and how they can be used to help our athletes. I was then one of only a few asked to re-present my presentation to all the Advanced coaches at their meetup the following day, which was a real honour.

The course has taken six months to complete and has been both educational and interesting. Learning about applied performance psychology from an equestrian specific perspective, using an accredited, scientifically-underpinned solution has been so beneficial. I’m now able to use these skills directly with my riders and help them improve their performance either at competition or in the school. I’ve learnt a whole host of techniques and methods for helping my riders achieve the right mindset, whether it be for winning a competition, perfecting a particular movement with their horse or summoning up the courage to try something new with their riding.

Centre 10 are performance psychology specialists who help equestrian coaches and riders optimise their psychological potential.  Find out more at www.centre10.com
